North Coast

North Coast has diverse terroir from coast to hills

Established in 1983, The North Coast AVA covers 6 counties north of San Francisco: Napa Valley, Sonoma, West Sonoma Coast, Los Carneros, Mendocino, Lake County, and Solano.

This AVA is the foundation of modern California winemaking and home to over half the state’s wineries. Stretching from fog-cooled coastlines to sunlit inland valleys, the region’s diverse terroir supports a mosiac of grape varieties and distinctive wine styles.

Every region has a story. Click on the California North Coast map to reveal the food, wine, and culture that define each destination.

Food is rustic and unfussy, rooted in farmers markets, coastal seafood, and artisan producers. Life here is creative and community-driven, with time spent outdoors and around the table. Coastal influences help produce balanced, food-friendly wines.

Mendocino County

Mendocino County is wild and remote, shaped by cool ocean air and towering redwood forests. Food is simple and seasonal, built around fresh seafood and locally foraged ingredients. Life moves slower here, guided by sustainability and creativity. Cool conditions produce wines that are fresh, expressive, and naturally balanced.

Lake County

Lake County sits at higher elevation, surrounded by volcanic soils and clear mountain air. Food is hearty and straightforward, made for outdoor living and open-fire cooking. Life here is active and adventurous, closely tied to the landscape. Elevation and cooling influences create wines with freshness, structure, and intensity.

Marin County

Marin County lies along the coast, defined by ocean fog, rolling hills, and open space. Food is light and fresh, centered on seafood, simple ingredients, and a wellness-focused lifestyle. Life here is calm and intentional, shaped by nature and coastal rhythms. Cool marine air helps produce wines with brightness and elegance.

Solano County
