2014 Barrel Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon
2014 Napa Valley Barrel Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon
This wine begins with aromas of blackberry jam, nutmeg, and herbs de Provence. Flavors of black current, toffee and baking spices are followed by bold tannins with a fruit finish.
The 2014 vintage in Napa Valley continued the recent trend of warm, dry growing conditions. With the warm spring weather, the vines were off to a strong and healthy start. While California experienced strong drought conditions, the dry heat actually helped the vines to grow powerfully-concentrated, high-quality fruit. As harvest began the weather cooled slightly, this slowed ripening of the grapes and allowed the grapes to develop more complex and impressive flavors.
Our 2014 Barrel Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon is primarily sourced from vineyards located in Atlas Peak and Howell Mountain with valley floor vineyards to round it out. Atlas Peak has rocky and volcanic soil which allows the grapevines to produce concentrated and flavorful grapes. Howell Mountain is especially well suited to growing intensely flavored Cabernet Sauvignon due to the combination of volcanic, iron laden soils and high elevation. The soils are especially lean which naturally limits the vigor of the grapevines, concentrating the flavors contributing to the intensity of the finished wine. The valley floor vineyards brings balance to the wine and adds acidity.
The hearty structure of this wine is perfect for robust dishes such as garlic rubbed leg of lamb with leeks or beef tenderloin with blueberry sauce.
